Surface Water & SuDS

Using Sustainable Drainage for surface water disposal is becoming a key requirement for a successful planning application particularly for larger developments.

Recent flood events have made this a key issue for the planners and is something the public are increasingly aware of.

Recent planning changes came into effect on 6 April 2015 with the introduction of the new Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) as a statutory planning consultee on any developments of 10 houses or more. As such a SuDS based flood risk assessment (drainage strategy) is now needed for all planning applications for 10 or more units, or for retail/commercial developments of a similar size.

We would always promote early engagement with the project design team to ensure that site layout plans set aside space for SuDS features. Failure to do this can result in planning delays and re-design.

EDS have over 20 years of SuDS design experience and have a wide range of software for SuDS design and storm simulations, which can be used to minimise the size of SuDS features and save precious development space and money.

Services we offer:

  • Outline SuDS advice at design concept stage.
  • Runoff calculations
  • SuDS sizing calculations
  • Soakaway design
  • Percolation testing to BRE365/CIRIA 156
  • Design and detailing of SuDS features.
  • Modelling of SuDS and pipework using XP Solutions MicroDraiange.
  • Liaison and negotiation with LLFA and planning authority on SuDS.
  • Ground Water Monitoring.
